German station announcements are fast, echoing, and built from a small set of fixed phrases. Once you know the phrases, you can pick the meaning out of the noise — which matters, because the announcement often comes before the display board updates.
They also have a certain dry poetry. Störung im Betriebsablauf — "disruption in the operating sequence" — is the Bahn's all-purpose explanation, and it tells you exactly nothing. This page translates what's said into what it means for you.
How an Announcement Is Built
Almost every delay announcement follows the same pattern:
Information zu ICE 597 nach München, Abfahrt 14:32. Heute circa 20 Minuten später. Grund dafür ist eine Störung im Betriebsablauf. Wir bitten um Entschuldigung.
Four parts: which train, how late, why, apology. Listen for the train number or destination first — if it isn't yours, you can stop listening.

Practice these words
circa 20 Minuten später
Quick notes:
- Heute von Gleis… is the one that makes a whole platform start walking. Platform changes are often announced only a few minutes before departure, and the new platform can be at the other end of the station.
- In umgekehrter Wagenreihung means the train has arrived back to front. First class is where second class should be, and your reserved carriage is at the opposite end of the platform. It's so common that it has become a running national joke.
- Schienenersatzverkehr — "rail replacement traffic", SEV for short — is one of the longest words you'll hear in daily life, and it always means a bus, a queue, and a longer journey.
- Auf unbestimmte Zeit verspätet is your cue to look for another route.
The Reasons, Translated
| German | Literally | In practice |
|---|---|---|
Störung im Betriebsablauf | disruption in operations | something went wrong; no details |
Verzögerungen im Betriebsablauf | delays in operations | same, slightly milder |
technische Störung am Zug | technical fault on the train | this train has a problem |
Signalstörung | signal failure | several trains affected |
Weichenstörung | points failure | several trains affected, often for a while |
Stellwerksstörung | signal box failure | a whole area is affected — expect long delays |
Bauarbeiten | construction work | planned; often SEV |
vorausfahrender Zug | a train ahead | stuck behind a slower or delayed train |
verspätete Bereitstellung | late provision of the train | the train wasn't ready at its starting station |
Warten auf Anschlussreisende | waiting for connecting passengers | held so others can make it |
kurzfristiger Personalausfall | short-notice staff absence | no driver or crew |
Personen im Gleis | people on the track | line closed until police clear it |
Notarzteinsatz am Gleis | emergency medical call on the track | serious; long delays and diversions |
witterungsbedingte Störung | weather-related disruption | storm, snow, heat |
Polizeieinsatz | police operation | unpredictable length |
Quick notes:
- As a rough guide: anything with -störung in a named piece of infrastructure (Signal-, Weichen-, Stellwerks-) affects the whole line, not just your train. Looking for another route is usually worth it.
- Notarzteinsatz am Gleis and Personen im Gleis mean the line is closed and nobody can say for how long. Staff will not give details. Check the app for diversions.
On the Platform
Please take care as the train arrives.
Bitte Vorsicht bei der Einfahrt.
Mind the platform edge.
Vorsicht an der Bahnsteigkante.
Stand back — the doors are closing.
Bitte zurückbleiben.
This train does not stop here.
Der Zug fährt durch.
Please board.
Bitte einsteigen.
The doors close automatically.
Türen schließen selbsttätig.
Please check the displays.
Bitte beachten Sie die Anzeigen.
Practice these words
Bitte Vorsicht bei der Einfahrt.
Quick note: Zurückbleiben, bitte on an S-Bahn or U-Bahn is not a suggestion. The doors are about to close and the train will leave whether you're through them or not.
On the Train
Next stop: …
Nächster Halt: …
We will shortly arrive at …
Wir erreichen in Kürze …
Exit on the left in the direction of travel.
Ausstieg in Fahrtrichtung links.
This train terminates here.
Dieser Zug endet hier.
All change, please.
Bitte alle aussteigen.
Your onward connections: …
Ihre nächsten Anschlüsse: …
You'll make the connection.
Der Anschluss wird erreicht.
The connection will not wait.
Der Anschluss wartet nicht.
We ask for your understanding.
Wir bitten um Ihr Verständnis.
Practice these words
Nächster Halt: …
Quick notes:
- Der Anschluss wird erreicht is the sentence a whole carriage is waiting to hear. Der Anschluss wartet nicht is the one that sends people to the doors with their bags before the train has stopped.
- Ausstieg in Fahrtrichtung links / rechts tells you which side the platform is on. It saves standing at the wrong door.
- Wir bitten um Ihr Verständnis is the standard closing line. Germans hear it so often that it's quoted ironically.
Why This Is Its Own Lesson
In recent years only around six in ten German long-distance trains have arrived on time — and the Bahn counts a train as punctual if it's less than six minutes late. Delays are an ordinary part of travelling, and complaining about them is a shared national pastime.
That's why these phrases are worth learning properly. They're short, they repeat, and understanding them is the difference between standing confused on Gleis 7 and being first up the stairs to Gleis 12. The English announcements on long-distance trains help, but they come second, and by then the Germans have already moved.
Three Mistakes to Avoid
Waiting for the board to update. The announcement is usually first. Listen for your train number.
Ignoring umgekehrte Wagenreihung. If you have a reservation, walk to the other end of the platform before the train arrives.
Treating all delay reasons as equal. A technische Störung am Zug affects one train. A Stellwerksstörung affects everything — find another route.
